November Leadership Meeting with Caplor Horizons.

Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It's about impact, influence and inspiration. Impact involves getting results, influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work, and you have to inspire team-mates. Leadership and communication are like conjoined twins, in vital organs, none would survive without the other. This message came out clearly during the Centre meeting led by Simon and Dan from Caplor Horizons on effective leadership and communication.
The objective of the day was to inspire the leadership of Ruben Centre and enable them to be excellent leaders by focusing on strategic change In particular, culture and effective communication. The Department heads have teams they are leading and after the training they would in turn, inspire, enable and create effective teams in the organization.
We kicked off the session with each person introducing themselves and citing one word that best describes them. Words like self-driven, self-motivated, creative, fun-loving, enthusiastic, lively, Explorer, calm, brave and others describing themselves in forms of animals like a horse.
We first session started off by exploring what culture is and engaging the leadership team to discuss on the Ruben Centre Culture which shapes leadership style and communication channels of an organization. Culture was defined as the The deeper level of basic assumptions and beliefs that are shared by members of an organisation, that operate unconsciously, and that define in a basic ‘taken-for-granted’ fashion an organisation’s view of itself and its environment” (Schein, 1985)
The beliefs, customs, arts of a particular society or a way of thinking, behaving, or working that exists in a place or organization (such as a business) and are often taken for granted. In groups the department heads were asked to discuss the culture of Ruben Centre based on our Routines & Rituals, Regular meetings such as the Centre meetings, Board Meetings as well as our habits.and again, the organization has a strong culture which is shaped by the values we learn from Edmund Rice such as being a church of the poor.
The next session on Effective Communication started by a quick Trivia on communication and these statistics on were quite interesting.When communicating, 55% of the communication is done though body language, 37% is taken by how we say it or our tone of voice while 7% is the actual verbal content of the message. The next exercise was a paper folding exercise with closed eyes which was to show how important effective communication is. Every individual was given a paper to fold while listening to the instructions carefully with no room to ask questions or seek clarification. This exercise was interesting with only few people managing to follow though the instructions and getting the right results. The last exercise was Called passing your message across where the instructor gave a message to one person and the message was to be passed across to the last person in the room and sure enough, a simple message as ‘I want to inspire future leaders’ was changed to ‘Why Should we inspire future leaders’ and finally to something totally different like ‘Baba yuko Zanzibar’ meaning ‘The opposition Leader is in Zanzibar.’Where was communication snagged?
