 June and what has happened to 2019? OH MY!

For the first time in my time at Ruben Centre, lack of funds delayed the distribution of salaries for the month of April. This dire situation was the back drop to a visit to Australia by Ms. Liz Mwangi (Program Manager) and me.  The document I wrote after our mid-term review in late 2018, “A Way into The Future” outlined the need for a financial plan for the Centre.

Many social commentators suggest that modern life and its business and fast pace is making zombies out of us all, and so teased by this call I looked up who a zombie is and learnt it ‘is someone who moves around as if unconscious. ‘

It somehow described my celebration of yesterday’s Church feast of the Annunciation.I tried to engage the theology of it all until I drifted into a zombie like state and after an hour of meditation, I had had the event but definitely not the experience.

Make a financial difference

In January 2019 the Centre will begin the year with an operation deficit of US$ 250,000 . This is new territory for us. We can blame Trump for pulling the plug on USAID funded Orphan and vulnerable children program here (US $100,000 ) and other parts of Kenya, but he would most likely say it was ‘fake news’ and deny everything, so we can also blame the Centre Team for being too compassionate and just doing what has to be done to make a difference to the lives of the vulnerable here in the slum.

Beginning 2019

2019 is well and truly with us. The Centre opened up on January 2nd after a ten   day break for Christmas and New year. However, the birthing unit remained in service 24/7 throughout and I even did a tour of duty Christmas eve waiting for a baby Jesus look alike.  It didn’t happen until later into Christmas day.
