Dishi na County Feeding Program

After over 3 months of anticipation, AEF Ruben Primary & Junior School children finally got to enjoy the Nairobi County Government’s "Dishi na County Feeding Program." The program put Ruben Centre in a difficult situation, forcing us to suspend our feeding program to make way for the County Government’s initiative. On January 9, 2024, the first truck, laden with shiny pots of food, arrived. In an effort to establish the dynamics of student numbers at the learning institution, all students were initially fed for free. However, the scene changed the next day when students were asked to load their Tap2Eat bracelets to cover the cost of their lunch going forward – at Ksh. 5 per meal.

In a delightful surprise for Ruben Centre, Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja arrived on Thursday, January 11, 2024. The brainchild of the feeding program was on the frontline with caterers, serving the children of Mukuru their plate of rice and beans. Ruben Centre Director, Br. Frank O'Shea, took advantage of the visit to discuss with the Governor the issue of the adjacent 5-acre parcel of land that Ruben Centre aims to utilize to extend support to the people of Mukuru.

As the new year and school term continue to unfold, Ruben Primary and Junior School strive to balance over 3500 students with the support of 57 teachers across the board. Ruben Centre remains committed to working with the Kenyan government to ensure the children and people of Mukuru are liberated through a compassionate response.
