On 9th October 2020, Ruben Centre hosted Kenchic to celebrate World Egg Day with the children of Mukuru. The event started with a bang against the backdrop of choral music by the Ruben Centre Orchestra, followed by drama performances and a participant’s engagement session guided by Kenchic.

Ambition, hope and resilience from the community members of Mukuru radiated through their energy as they performed, cheered and participated in the day’s activities. Children as young as 10 years old bravely portrayed their flexibility through the gymnastics leaving the audience in awe as their older counterparts, retained the vibrance with passion.

Coupled with the majority of activities was a comprehensive and engaging educational session by Kenchic about an egg. Tiny as an egg seems, it has many benefits. These include an egg being rich in nutrients such as proteins, vitamins and minerals. The vitamins A, D, E and K that are contained in egg aid with bone formation, fibre developments in the body systems as well as provide nutrition benefits such as proteins which are body building nutrients.

Furthermore, the children of Mukuru learnt the different recipes which an egg can make such as the spanish omelette, baked eggs with cheese, basic omelette, scrambled egg, stir-fry and anytime eggs which doubles as the basic egg recipes. Following the display of how the different recipes are done by Kenchic, ready-made samples were distributed among the children and one girl given a chance to make scrambled eggs.  At the end of the brief event, Kenchic donated an additional 3000 eggs to the Ruben Centre!

The humanitarian challenges plaguing the Mukuru settlements make it hard for the residents to eke a living, but this hasn’t whitewashed their desire for a better life. The placement of the Ruben Centre at the heart of Mukuru slums continues to facilitate its work with partners and donors towards a just and empowered Mukuru community.

Ruben Centre appreciates and acknowledges the great strides taken by a Kenyan corporate to give back to its people.
