From Mukuru to Dublin

Young Collins together with Elizabeth Njoroge, founder of Ghetto classics

When the orchestra began in 2014 with just a few recorder learners, it carried a simple dream: to open up a bigger world for the children of Mukuru. Over the years, that dream has taken shape in extraordinary ways. Our students have been invited to perform at top international schools across the country for musical eisteddfods, and eight of the founding members are now part of the Nairobi Orchestra. Yet all these milestones pale in comparison to what we experienced on Friday night.

Ruben Centre Director Br. Frank, Communications Associate Benson, orchestra violinist Collins Odhiambo’s family, and several of his fellow orchestra students gathered at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to see Collins off as he departed for Dublin, Ireland. There, he will pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Music at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, under Trinity College. For Collins’ mother, it was a moment beyond imagination—her first time at the airport, and even more so, watching her son embark on a journey that will carry him far beyond Mukuru. Her joy was written across her face, a reminder that dreams truly can come from the humblest of beginnings.

What began as a short four-week opportunity for Collins has blossomed into a full four-year scholarship—proof that when talent meets opportunity, doors open wide. As Br. Frank reminded him with fatherly simplicity, “Go and network.” With those words, Collins carries not only his violin but also the hopes of his entire community, stepping onto a global stage where the sky is the limit.

Upon arriving in Dublin, Collins shared these heartfelt words:

“Here in a new land, I am ready to hone my skills, learn from exceptional mentors, and immerse myself in a community where music and education meet. Starting life in a new city comes with challenges, but I have been incredibly fortunate. I will be forever grateful to Br. Frank, Paula, Irene, Sr. Mary, and all those who have helped me get to where I am today. I am ready to make Dublin feel like home.”

At Ruben Centre, we could not be prouder of Collins. We wish him every success in this new chapter and trust that his journey will inspire countless other children from Mukuru to believe in their own possibilities.
